Dinosaur Pile-Up Does Asbury Park

One of the perks of living in a music town like Asbury Park is the exposure to bands you may not have seen or heard of as they pass through our little city by the sea. The latest group to catch my attention was Dinosaur Pile-Up. The English alt rockers brought their Dinosaur Pile-Up Does America Tour to Wonder Bar last week along with Honeyknife and Kamenar. It was a great midweek musical respit for all those who showed up.

Founded in Leeds almost twenty years ago, Dinosaur Pile-Up has a solid catalog, including 2025’s release I’ve Felt Better. Unfortunately Mike Sheils wasn’t able to join the band on this tour, but Adam Breeze filled in admirably behind the drums with a powerful performance. The trio played a loud and grungy set which included newer songs like “Punk Kiss” and “‘Bout To Lose It” and older faves like “11:11” and “Thrash Metal Cassette.” And of course they closed with their most popular hit, “Back Foot.” The diehard fans that showed up this night (including APV’s founder Diane DiMemmo) definitely went home satisfied.

Tampa-based Kamenar kicked off the show with some great hard rock that set the tone for the rest of the night. The twin brothers Sean and John Kamenar played loud enough that you’d think there were more than just the two of them on stage. Very Royal Blood-esque. Honeyknife followed with a strong set of their own. The alt rockers hailing from Atlanta have only been together for a couple of years, but play like seasoned vets. Both of these bands should be on your radar.

While this tour has now wrapped, we can only hope that Dinosaur Pile-Up returns to the States sometime soon. Honeyknife has some shows coming up in North Carolina in April, and Kamenar returns to Asbury Park in April when they open for Pop Evil at The Stone Pony. Until then, be sure to check out these three bands wherever you stream your music.

Two of those shots ended up being published in Photofantasm Soundgarden: Nudedragons to King Animal, and he has been bringing his cameras to shows ever since. He relocated to Asbury in 2019 for its rich music and art scenes...and to save on tolls! He is a big supporter of the local music scene and has become well known amongst the bands for his photos.
