Portugal. The Man has established a highly dedicated fanbase in their many years as a band. It also seems that the band has cultivated a very loyal connection to the Garden State itself. Having performed at iconic venues such as The Stone Pony and Starland Ballroom, the band returned to Asbury Lanes for a sold out show that served as an exhilarating showcase for their dynamic sound and dug deep into their vast catalog as well!
Having released their recent album Shish earlier in the month, the band wasted no time in jumping into the latest record which sounded vibrant and exhilarating live and their infectious energy set the mood effortlessly. From there, the band worked through their catalog performing highlights such as “Holly Roller (Hallelujah), “Purple Yellow Red and Blue”, and “Modern Jesus”. It’s a testament to their skill that their newer material lined up seamlessly against their older staples. Frontman John Baldwin Gourley and co-vocalist Zoe Manville brought plenty of stage presence and their backing band more than matched them beat for beat. The set also featured a cameo from none other than Danny Clinch who sat in for a few songs making for a welcome surprise. It was welcome that throughout their set how grateful the band were for their fans and the nods they gave to New Jersey’s rich music scene.
Credit also goes out to opening act La Luz, an all female indie rock band from Los Angeles who managed to leave an impression despite the short duration of their set. The band’s mix of vintage sounds made for a refreshing experience and helped effectively set the mood for the show.
When you’ve been a touring band for a decade, it’s natural to build a passionate fanbase. Portugal. The Man’s most recent Asbury Park show is a satisfying showcase of their enduring appeal and proves that several years in, the band’s momentum and artistry isn’t slowing down at all.
