The Wheeland Brothers Bring the Beach to Starland Ballroom

The Wheeland Brothers

Before the headliner ever stepped on stage, Starland Ballroom felt a few degrees warmer.

Opening for Niko Moon on Friday, April 11, the Wheeland Brothers did more than kick off the night. They shifted the mood in the room. What started as an early crowd still settling in turned into something closer to a Southern California beach party within the first few songs.

This was not my first time seeing the Wheeland Brothers. I caught them at the Wonder Bar last year, and it was one of those sets that stayed with me well after the night ended. Seeing them step into a larger room like Starland confirmed what stood out then. Their music scales up, but the connection stays personal.

Travis and Nathan took the stage in their usual laid-back style, barefoot and in bathing suits, and got right into it. No buildup. No overthinking. Their mix of surf rock, reggae grooves, and acoustic driven pop carries hints of 311, No Doubt, Donavon Frankenreiter, and Jack Johnson, but it comes across as something natural rather than borrowed.

Their catalog leans into that Southern California lifestyle. Songs about the beach, the road, and everyday moments feel genuine, not forced. That sense of authenticity carries easily into their live show.

You could see the shift happen in real time.

A few songs in, the crowd that came for the headliner was paying attention. By the middle of the set, people had moved closer to the stage, clapping along and fully engaged.

The Wheeland Brothers thrive in that space. They play to the room, work the edge of the stage, and connect with the audience in a way that feels easy and unforced. Even in a packed indoor venue in New Jersey, they bring a bit of the coast with them.

At times, the set settles into a similar groove, but the energy and crowd connection carry it forward.

They will be back in New Jersey this summer:

6/21 – Wildwood, NJ – Barefoot Country Festival
6/30 – Beach Haven, NJ – Bird & Betty’s
7/1 – Asbury Park, NJ – Wonder Bar
7/3 – Highlands, NJ – Sandbox at Seastreak

Based on the crowd response, the line at the merch table, and the turnout for the meet and greet after the show, they are building something that is catching on. If Friday night was any indication, they will not be opening for long.
