Dogs in a Pile Jams the Night (and Summer) Away in Asbury Park

As the summer drew to a close, Dogs in a Pile took to The Stone Summer Stage to wrap up the musical portion of Labor Day Weekend with an incredible night of music and fun. If you are not familiar with this band, they have an eclectic sound that merges funk, jazz, and rock and roll with psychedelia. They are known for improvisational jams and have an extremely dedicated fanbase for such a young group. And on this night, their talent would be on full display.

But first, the show kicked off with the musical stylings of Low Cut Connie. The Philadelphia rockers were led by the always entertaining Adam Weiner, who is one of the most entertaining frontmen I’ve seen of late. The setlist included a combination of original songs like “Big Thighs NJ” and a series of covers. The one that stood out the most for me was a fun rendition of “Where Eagles Dare” by The Misfits. This is a band that needs to be seen live, and the Jersey Shore gets another chance when they return to The Stone Pony in December.

By the time Dogs in a Pile took the stage, the Dog Pound was brimming with anticipation. And I doubt any of them went home unsatisfied. This was my first time seeing them live, and even though this isn’t my usual style of music, I could not help being impressed with just how talented they were. The musicianship was on point, and it was very easy to get caught up in their vibe and the energy from the crowd. They played two sets on this beautiful late summer night, and were joined by the Ocean Avenue Stompers for four songs. The guys even threw in a couple of covers—an instrumental version of “Dancing in the Street” during the second set and “Bulls on Parade” for the encore.

Dogs in a Pile heads to the west coast this month and continues to tour through the end of the year. You should check them out if you get a chance…no tie-dye shirts required for entry. Until then, definitely look them up wherever you stream your music. And don’t forget to check out Low Cut Connie too!
