King’s X at The Vogel in Red Bank

From the moment doors opened at The Vogel, it was clear this wasn’t just another rock show, it was a gathering of the faithful. The rail filled early, and the energy built fast, thanks to a killer opening set from Colossal Street Jam. Frontman Gene Potts, proudly calling themselves “super fans” of King's X, warmed up the crowd with soulful swagger.

When Doug Pinnick, Ty Tabor, and Jerry Gaskill took the stage, the atmosphere shifted from warm-up to worship. King’s X, often credited as pioneers of genre blending hard rock and revered by musicians across scenes, proved their influence remains undeniable. Launching into “Groove Machine” and rolling through a dynamic 17-song set, they covered the full emotional spectrum, from the haunting “Cigarettes” to the anthemic “Dogman.” The band’s chemistry was electric. Pinnick’s vocals cut deep with soulful grit, Tabor’s guitar shimmered with melodic precision, and Gaskill laid down the pulse with effortless authority.

The Vogel itself added its own magic. The two-level, standing venue gave the show the feel of an old-school Jersey rock club from the 80’s—intimate, immersive, and raw. As a photographer, I would typically shoot King’s X in black and white, but the lighting design demanded color. Vibrant washes of red, blue, gold and green, turned each song into a visual statement. It was the perfect venue to witness a band this emotionally and sonically powerful.

If there’s any justice, King’s X will return to this room again and again. Judging by the crowd’s response, they’ll be met every time with open arms and packed rails.
