Girlfriends on Top of the World at Pier 17
Girlfriends spent their first day on the Creative Control Tour in New York City. They played at Pier 17, one of the most beautiful venues. It has spectacular views of the Manhattan skyline around the venue's roof. It hosts an inaugural Summer Concert Series, which has been going on since 2018. It has won multiple awards, and if you can visit this iconic venue in person, you will see why.
Girlfriends consist of Travis Mills and Nick Gross. You may recognize Travis’ name from multiple different places. He was on a few tv shows, and you may also know him when he went by T.Mills in the Warped Tour days. Nick Gross co-founded the music group Big Noise, and you may recognize him as the drummer from Goldfinger.
The duo came together in 2020 to found the band Girlfriends and hit the ground running. They are a pop-punk band that has come out with plenty of successful songs in under three years. While they are in the pop-punk genre, my favorite genre of music, they put their own spin on it, giving them a unique sound. Stemming from LA, they know what it takes to stand out amongst other bands. They have over half a million monthly listeners on Spotify, which is quite an achievement.
I was able to catch up with Girlfriends before the set to get some quick photoshoot photos of them. They made it fun and did a great job posing. Both Travis and Nick were so laid back and friendly. It’s refreshing to see they are the same on stage as off stage.
Girlfriends opened the evening and set the bar high for the bands to follow. They played a fantastic set and gained a lot of new fans. I overheard fans saying they would add Girlfriends' music to their playlists. You may be familiar with their hit single California, which has surpassed 20 million plays on Spotify! They also played the song Plastic, and Travis got fans to wave their hands back up and down to the catchy beat.
This was so cool to watch, especially on a rooftop in New York City! Both songs are on their new EP, Over My Dead Body via Big Noise, which came out on May 12th. You could see fans all over the rooftop bobbing their heads and dancing with Travis while he sang.
They also played their hit song "Jessica," another fan favorite, with over 13 million plays on Spotify! Travis got down low for this song and interacted with the fans throughout it. They also played their hit single "Tattoo" which is one of my favorites. The crowd had a great reaction to this one. They even played some songs from their (e)motion sickness album, including the deluxe such as SHOUT. The crowd loved this one, and you could feel the energy from them jumping up and down.
They’re on the road until the beginning of July, supporting The Used and Pierce The Veil. Make sure you check out Girlfriends and experience their fantastic set for yourself at one of their tour dates here before they sell out! If you cannot make their tour, they also released some new merch. Make sure you pick it up and listen to their music; you won’t regret it!
