Pigeons Playing Ping Pong Bring the F-U-N-K to Asbury Park

Neither the rain nor fog could stop Pigeons Playing Ping Pong from selling out the legendary Stone Pony this past weekend. The Baltimore band known for its “head-turning high-energy psychedelic funk shows” and consistent touring treated the packed house to a late night jam session that made you forget about the dreary weather outside. Their energy was infectious, and they hooked me in right away as they kicked their set off with “Yo Soy Fiesta” and “Melting Lights”.

When I saw the setlist they posted after the show, it was hard to believe they played a dozen songs since it felt like the music never stopped. They even snuck in a cover of NSYNC’s “Bye Bye Bye” to the crowd’s delight. Brian Murray from Asbury Park’s own Dogs in a Pile joined the band for “Lightning”, and they closed out the night covering “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” with tourmates The Infamous Stringdusters.

If you haven’t seen a Pigeons Playing Ping Pong show yet…what are you waiting for? To get a taste of what the band sounds like live, their latest album Live at The Capitol Theater dropped earlier this year. But honestly, nothing will top seeing them in person. Check out their schedule to see when they’ll be playing near you.

Michael is an Asbury Park based photographer of what life puts in front of him. He snuck his camera into a concert for the first time in 2011 when he went to see Soundgarden on their reunion tour. Two of those shots ended up being published in Photofantasm Soundgarden: Nudedragons to King Animal, and he has been bringing his cameras to shows ever since. He relocated to Asbury in 2019 for its rich music and art scenes...and to save on tolls! He is a big supporter of the local music scene and has become well known amongst the bands for his photos.
