Vampire Weekend Makes Long Awaited Return to NJ with Four Sold Out Shows at Historic Wellmont Theater

Vampire Weekend have established themselves as one of indie rock’s most beloved and engaging acts throughout the years. With a massively dedicated fanbase and several successful tours including tenures at iconic venues such as MSG, the band decided to return to New Jersey in epic fashion with a four show residency at the historic Wellmont Theater. The venue is decidely more intimate than those they’ve occupied lately, but was an effective setting as the band not only showcased their excellent new record Only God Above Us but also dove into music all throughout their eclectic discography.

Frontman Ezra Koneing seemed to relish the opportunity to perform in an intimate setting, and the band’s performance was full of non-stop joy and passion with plenty of the their trademark enthusiasm present. The setlist was especially well curated, with fan favorites “Diane Young”, “This Life”, “Oxford Comma”, and “A-Punk” all making the cut. Some songs were performed for the first time in years such as “Giant” and “Taxi Cab”. Throughout the set, Koening established a genuine rapport with the audience and the added intimacy made for a truly special and immersive experience.

What truly made Vampire Weekend’s run of shows at the Wellmont so special was their dedication to crafting a show designed as a love letter to their fans. Not only was the band at the top of their game musically, but their performances shined through with a level of sheer joy you don’t always get to witness now a days.

When a band reaches a certain level of success, sometimes they can feel less accessible. Vampire Weekend subverted this trend during this series of shows which were refreshingly sincere and a captivating showcase of their enduring talent. Overall , their Montclair residency is another fine achievement in a career full of many. Let’s hope it’s not another 16 years until they decide to bless the Garden State once more!
